Competition Programs

Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is for women and girls of all ages. At Koorana Gymnastics, our WAG Program begins at Level 4 after the completion of the STEPS Program. After mastering the basics in STEPS, gymnasts are invited to further develop their skills and challenge themselves through competitions at both local and national levels. To participate in Koorana Gymnastics’ WAG Program, gymnasts must be willing to train many hours to ensure they are the most prepared they can be for competitions.

Participating in WAG;

  • Enhances coordination and agility for body awareness and balance

  • Develops posture and confident body movements, including the ability to land safely

  • Enhances creativity and builds self-confidence, for sport and life

  • Develops strength and flexibility, for life’s constant challenges

  • Develops healthy minds and bodies for now and later life

There are four competitive apparatus in WAG;

Vault

Consisting of a 20 metre sprint toward a vaulting table, followed by a springing motion onto and off the hands to land on the other side. Additional rotations or twists increase the overall difficulty.

Uneven Bars

Requiring strength, precision and rhythm, the gymnast swings from one bar to the other, alternating grip changes, releases, saltos and changes of direction.

Beam

An apparatus that demonstrates not only flexibility, but also concentration, rhythm and expression. The gymnast performs a combination of acrobatic elements, jumps, leaps and turns.

Floor

Involves a creative combination of expressive dance, big acrobatics and powerful gymnastics performed to music, where each gymnast communicates her own personality and style.

Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG)

Men’s  Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) builds strength, agility and enhances co-ordination while building resilience and confident body movements. It is the perfect sport to challenge the mind and body to reach new goals while participating in a structured and safe class environment. MAG will build confidence and test thrill-seekers of any age.

There are six competitive apparatus in MAG;

Floor
an exercise in pure acrobatics, alternating between powerful tumbling series and the composure necessary for balance and strength elements

pommel horse
routines mostly involve circles of the legs together and pendulous, scissor swings with the legs split, spectacularly combining these movements while turning and travelling along the horse.

rings
a difficult combination of strength and swinging elements requiring control, strength and balance in the forward and backward swings and strength holds.

vault

a 25m sprint creates the necessary power to explode from the board before the dynamic push off the table, to generate greater height for rotations and flight before landing on the other side.

parallel bars
routines require swinging above and below the bars with acrobatic flight, changes of directions and precise balances, ending in a dramatic dismount off the side or the end of the bars

high bar
a spectacular apparatus, largely due to the combination and variation of giant swings, acrobatic releases and re-grasp flight elements. The high dismounts from the bar allows the gymnast to show his acrobatic talents and landing prowess.

Steps

The Steps program at Koorana Gymnastics is a developmental pathway for pre-competition WAG athletes. Gymnasts can progress through Steps Levels 1-7 based on a curriculum of skills that align with Gymnastics Australia WAG Levels 1-3.
Steps testing is bi-annual and in-house, and allows gymnasts to progress through the levels at their own speed. Once gymnasts have completed Steps Level 7, they will enter Pre-Level 4, and begin preparing for the Australian Levels Program, and state based competitions.
